further up north...

...up there in Edinburgh is a place called 'The Spider and The Fly' which is a fabulous, pop-up shop, gallery/exhibition space and boutique. it is filled to the brim with handmade treasures from the best indie designers around, art, prints, badges, clothing, accessories, jewellery, home wares, toys – the list just foes on and on. And so, up there you will find some of my ladysnail creations, badges, purses and plush items. Further info can be found here at Magpie's Blog. Thanks go to the same blog for the picture above.

in other news, i have been working away like a demon on all things drawing, painting, printing and Manchester Craft Mafia. i was in the print room yesterday exposing and preparing a screen ready to print and i am extremely looking forward to future days spent in the print room printing. last night i went to see Toy Story 3 - 3D and it was excellent, by far the best film i have seen in a long time.

colour picking...

...chopping, cutting and sticking layers. this is what i have achieved in about six hours of solid concentration. it has been a difficult day, working out what to do and with planning a screen-print, my mind works overtime to how it will turn out. so in the end i have decided to go ahead with the accordion lion, probably be 2 or3 colour layer print with or without texture on the chair. i think once i know how that one actually prints out, it will help me make a decision on the layers for the twosome above. the green outline works well against the other colours of which there may 4 or 5. i tried a pink outline but it wasn't working so i am saving that for another idea and i don't mind if his hair is green. next up is wood. wood for the birds.

super titan...

...to the rescue. the new computer and i are busy working away on some print plans for possible screen-prints for next weeks activities. it was a tad slow going at first but i think we are onto something. i am wondering how to 'step it up' with the screen-printing, filling in the spaces with colour and texture, and/or, both/together. all sorts of possibilities but we are starting off with two designs, the one above, who is drawn from someone i saw on the streets of Mancland (my name for Manchester) and another one or two. these others i cant quite decide which to do but i have a selection from the big sketchbook to pick from.

new...

...two new swimming fish pictures are in the etsy shop right now. finally taking the time to complete some parts of the to-do list with getting items up online. its a lot easy with scanning in pictures and prints but not so easy with the photographs. with the rain we have had lately, there is no chance of being outside with natural sunlight. also, because Super Titan is now super, i can now play Sims2 which is deadly for my time. being given a nintendo ds for christmas was bad enough but now i have two major distractions. i haven't played Sims2 in over a year and revisiting it is great fun. very addictive but so is drawing. who will win?
in the shop...

...just listed up in etsy now. pop over to see it if you fancy splashing out. Thanks to the lovely Tom - Swimming Fish - Prefixes and Suffixes has now SOLD. i have two more fish pictures to sort out with their pencil outlines and mount this evening as that is the next job on the to-do list and then its time to plan a new print with Super Titan who is the new computer. i haven't sworn at him yet but i did swear at the wireless component when it wouldn't work when we first put it in but its little antenna is doing a grand job. i bought loads more embroidery hoops this afternoon while out in the rain but i missed a bargain of a jumper that i saw in the charity shop window. gutted. it was a man's one but i liked the emblem bit so i went back to try it on but it had gone.

Big thanks go to creativetourist who mentioned me in their article, 'Top Northwest Designers to Watch' - to be listed in the same space as Mr PS and Nell Smith - wow.
triangles...

...due to the laptop to craptop issues of the last fortnight, i have unable to blog about any adventures so the photo above is of bunting triangles before they were sewn to the ribbon. i have been making bunting for just over a month now and the first ones i made were from my old screen prints. on the same mission of using old work and materials to create new work and space, i thought bunting would be good idea and it was. from there i picked out fabric from my two boxes that i have collected from all avenues over the years, bought, found, charity shops, given, kept, hidden and unused. most bunting i have made is on a theme of either colours or the patterns, for example so far i have made ones that are my screen printed characters/cream, red/blue, pink, pink/red, green, blue/green, funky and dots. i have taken these out to the recent craft fairs and they are very popular and look great round the front of my table. i plan to put some up on online in my shops soon but if there are any requests please do get in touch.
busy busy...

...bee. i have not stopped moving for about three weeks now and i constantly feel happy. i have been naughty and taken no photos of anything that i have done lately, Beech Road, L0-Fi Deb Demo Day, Super Duper Fair and of work that i have made so here is a painting that i did on Saturday of the swimming fish. i also made one with the sherbet lemon fish but that found a new home on Sunday. the one above is for sale and will be on etsy or folksy this week depending where i decided to put it but if you are interested before it is listed, please let me know. i have been paying much more attention to the circus story, i am quite liking drawing thumbnails and spread planning, bits of the story aren't concrete at the moment so i think the writer and i will be having another go at the middle to end bit soon.

previously...

...last week on Tuesday, i gave my first ever demonstration to the Lo-Fi DIY crowd of lovely people. it was a great evening, and i enjoyed it so much. it was very busy and my face did not go lollipop red which is the norm as well as making up new words. i showed people how to use Shrink Plastic (shrinkies) to make all kinds of different things. everyone got stuck in with creating designs and colouring in but we reached a hiccup when we tried to use Fred's oven in his cafe. his is an industrial one as opposed to a domestic oven which is what i normally use. all was well though after an explanation, everyone continued with their designs and took their work home to shrink so we shall be having a big show and tell at the next Lo-Fi DIY meet-up. i also made my first ever fact sheet to email out the next day and i think this is something i should do beforehand to hand out before/during/after demo-time.

if you wish to spot me, i am the one in the pink cardigan, standing up near the doorway and kinda in the middle of the photo. photo credits go to Chris and also thanks to Lisa who looks after the Manchester Craft Mafia Facebook page - where i got this photo from.
also...

...on Sunday, Manchester Craft Mafia will be in Didsbury at the above event with our huge gazebo full of our lovely handmade things but without me. the new computer, now named 'Super Titan' is on the dining table behind me. i am letting it settle in for the evening before i unleash the work on it tomorrow afternoon. i have been drawing but am struggling with the development of the characters and story spreads but i have to remember that if i stick with it, i am bound to get through the 'wall' soon. self teaching and independent learning is/can be quite hard. i will keep drawing.
new computer...

...the new one is here but don't tell the laptop. at this very moment we have set it up in the living room and installing everything. i can not believe how quick the delivery was! in the end we picked a PC over a laptop and Mac. specification wise, i haven't a clue what it is but it is a beast. i needed something affordable, pretty strong electronic wise and it is a new speedy bag of tricks. i have forever been a PC user and John is pretty good at sorting out/building/fixing them. i don't know if i could handle learning how to use a Mac and to have one would have been nice but maybe in another five or so years, who knows. bless the little laptop, it has been with me since i started university but it is so tired and slow now.

in other news, all i have been doing is making with a little bit of drawing while this laptop drama has been unfolding. i now have little robotingtons, bunting and raindrop badges. no small illustrated badges as the shop is out of stock of my supplies. i still have some left for the weekend but just a few. i really wanted to make some new designs but nope, that idea is on hold for now.

WILL BE BACK VERY SOON!

laptop woes...

...my craptop, i mean laptop, has been slowly dying over the last couple of weeks and this week, it has taken a turn for the worst. i have sworn at it so many times in the hope of beefing it up but the time has come to replace it. i have been unable to do any type of computer related work on it as it now switches itself off after about fifteen minutes. bless its little electro brain. i have been unable to scan, edit, create, potatochop, blog, twitter and everything else for a while. the new computer is on its way and hopefully should arrive tomorrow.

PLEASE REMEMBER - I will now be in two places at once this SUNDAY! I myself will be in Blackpool with my wares and my wares will be with the MANCHESTER CRAFT MAFIA in Didsbury. If i can, I will post more information tomorrow, if the mister lets me use his computer but he is thesis writing at the moment so i doubt it.

07 July 2010

soon...

...not this Sunday but next Sunday, I will be at Stanley Park in Blackpool with my prints and crafty wares at the above handmade fair. Here is a link for more information. I am working on various things at the moment and time will tell if any come to bare or bear fruit. I intend to have at least one new print, new badges, bunting, painted fish pictures, stitched prints and maybe a wooden painting ready. most things are at the half way stage. I turned down the chance to go to Alton Towers today as I am a roll with work. I am in the zone and so I thought it best to stay and carry on.

new...

...many things have happened within the last two weeks, new arrivals, work, outings, festivals, party nights and stupid blogspot problems. i have been unable to post for a while due to blogspot and their numerous problems but Chris from NY sent me an email with some helpful advice. the photo above is of my granma who will be 80 this year and her great-granddaughter Caitlin, who is my sister's first child, meaning I am now Debbie Super Aunt! babies are something i am not used to but she is adorable. she was born two weeks early and i saw her when she was only one week old. i have been busy with Manchester Craft Mafia and we had a super mega stall at Beech Road Festival on Sunday where I took my new print browser, new stitched prints and handmade recycled bunting. all did extremely well. now it is back to the story and endless days of drawing and making.
