cappuccino...

...with a sprinkling of chocolate served with fresh acorns. i have been making badges today. one new design with an old favourite though technically the acorns are new as i had to start the design from scratch due to the stupid computer 'losing' my psd file of badges that i had all ready and waiting to be printed out. i only have seven more sheets of badge paper to work with so i am hoping the apple design along with a couple of others off the to-do badge list will work out ok. then it is on to labelling and packing on Thursday - my next day off! i am back to drawing in the A5 sketchbook. i find it helps me unwind a little after a day in the office as i can doodle while watching the telly.

07 December 2009

completed...

...off the to-do list of to-doing. first off we have a batch of screen-printed calico raindrop badges. these will be at the christmas markets at the weekend. some of you will have seen these before but unfortunately these will be the last batch until further notice. i am now working on some robotingtons that have been half made since forever and a day. next up is tea time and then it is on to badges with the new designs with the second zine for afters. i have a day of freedom tomorrow so i hope to work late into the night with the music in the drawing room.

in reply to Christiane's question from the previous post, i am making badges using shrink paper - i do not have a badge machine. an option is there though as there are people on etsy who will make your illustrations into badges for you if you do not want to buy a machine and the various supplies.

05 December 2009

mini...

...update with a very sketchy sketch. i am here, making badges with left over supplies. i am still ill and have no time to speak of for much else other then making them cappuccino's and kanye west panini's. there has been i suppose, a little bit of free time and the story has reached spread planning stage and soon i shall be making dummy books. the above sketch is part of story two. i planned to do play with dummy books the other day but the to-do list decided not to work. christmas markets are next weekend. i have a lot of label making and packaging to do to put on the to-do do list.

as asked in a comment, a kanye west panini is a cajun chicken panini. a customer once asked for a kanye panini as they didn't know how to pronounce cajun.

excuse me love...

...where can i find a jar of strawberry jam without bits please? i reckon that is the first ever real book spread that i have done. you can click on it to see it bigger. i must say it was exciting and i was at one with the felt-tips the day i drew this. i think after the big clean, i must have cleaned out the brain of over thinking and must try to stay on this level of thinking. i am having fun and i cant wait to get back to the story. it doesn't have a title yet or any real words. it may stay without words but will feature colour in time. there is no rushing on this but there is a focus of imagination on this one.
like...

...i have been working on a very random, loose story featuring my lion character for about two weeks. i am drawing very roughly in a large square sketchbook that is quite difficult to scan in. to start it off there is lion, riding his bike around town. he sees many things on his travels like the reading bear and has to take shelter in a cafe when it rains. here he is trying to fix a puncture. i drew him on a park bench trying to fix his puncture but it was a very very small drawing. i am not sure what i am doing but i am enjoying drawing things that i cant rub out. next up is trying to decide how many pages and then work properly on some spreads as the ones in my sketchbook are rough rough like sandpaper.

29 November 2009

hibernation...

...i have been hiding away since my last post as the weeks following that i have had, two power cuts, a broken boiler, cafe work to do (mega long days), no energy and i am still doing the last bits of the super mega clean. i have been drawing, i know results are yet to be seen but katieface can vouch for me. if i manage to make it to the drawing room tomorrow, i may try scan some felt-tip pen madness in. this weekend i have been mostly ill and finishing off half finished things in the hope that i will have stock to send out and sell at the christmas markets. overall i am just a little fed up and super mega tired.

18 November 2009

hello...

...so here we are. the mister and i are now married and we had a lovely honeymoon in Keswick. aye, we did go to the pencil museum. the world's biggest pencil was amazing! since we returned, i have been doing a super mega clean in order to get rid of any art related distractions and just general flat distractions. i have thoroughly thought about what i want to do and still want to draw but just got bit side tracked by various things as you do or i do. i have cleared out various materials, wool, buttons, beads, sequins and other things of which will soon be going on ebay in order to help me raise funds for an A3 scanner. i have kept the pencils, paint and bits of craft fabric but there will be a systematic way of doing things from now on. the flat is clean and the office is cleaner.

thanks to all who visit my dear blog and i hope to post a picture this evening or sometime this week.

08 October 2009

what i wore today...

...and nothing much else to report as the chance to draw is being pushed aside at the moment what with the wedding getting closer. there are things that i can and have drawn about it all, balloons, cakes, politicians visiting Manchester, florists and flowers, coffee shop visits, shoe hunting and what not. the list goes on and on, wedding and non-wedding related things. there are half filled pages in the sketchbook, not much done with the cycling lions or the owl and pussycat which i have decided is not such a good idea. so please stick with me while i having a bit of a break from illustration. i will be back in full force as and when.

30 September 2009

to the brim...

...i do not think i could have fitted anything else into the last nine or so days. i have been at work, away from work, to Huddersfield here and there. there is to much to write about, most of it personal and half of it not so but the sketchbook speaks for itself these days. it is like a heartbeat that i carry around with me in my handbag. i think i have mastered Katie's glasses now so at least she looks more like a Katie Cat Lion now whereas Mark just looks like John.

23 September 2009

mini cheddars...

...a lion with actual open eyes. scary looking and odd are what he looks like. not sure on that idea. may have to play around with eyes. there is another 'what i wore today' in this page. i don't like how i coloured in the trousers as the pencil was being rubbish at colouring in. today is a day off but i feel so ill. the nose is super blocked up, i cant breathe and have a deaf ear. i think i have caught a cold and that on to of my regular stupid nose illness is not helping. here is to a day of drawing and writing in the cosy office. i ain't going outside unless i really have to.

21 September 2009

hello...

...is it me you're looking for? said Mr Colour to Debbie. i have tried a little bit of colouring-in this evening and am getting rather silly and excited but i now have to leave it to go eat an amazing Shepard's Pie. i am trying to combine the felt-tips, collage and digital colour to give what i draw that bit 'more' about them that they deserve. there is another 'what i wore today' on this page. i may have to make up some clothes to draw as i don't have that many. more like 'what i wish i wore today'. i heart the new laptop character.

20 September 2009

what i wore today...

...is something i spotted on the web and so i have decided to throw in my two pence and join in the fun but in lion form. link. i think it may help me with colouring in as i will have to colour for the clothes to make sense. i have had a super weekend with in Sheffield and with thanks to ali, i now have a better, faster, stronger looking website. i keep drawing, giving it 100%. i really like the lion with the handbag and milkshake from the page up top. i think its the face and how it slants. did anyone see Sir David pretending to be a sloth on J Ross? made me smile. if i had a cat i would have to call it Sir David.

17 September 2009

johnny...

...while i was over in Huddersfield last Friday, i went to see Dee, who is another Debbie not the one in Stoke but the one in Hudds and her dad. Her dad, Johnny is a rock and roll busker and i drew him while he sang and played. it was cool. i am planning to go again sometime soon, so i can sit and draw him again but many times over the course of a busking session - maybe as an actually person! other than that, i enjoyed a lot of tea last week, watched the telly, drew a skateboarder in Manchester and drew the Finland guy while sat on the train. he was a lion character asking to be drawn!

16 September 2009

eyes...

...observational drawing is cool. while out in the sun last week, i sat in st. peters square or thereabouts and drew some people. the best ones to draw are the suits. they are always dressed, carrying something or other, talking on a phone and just talking in general in 'suit talk' which can be funny to listen to. they use words to baffle people and half the time, none of it ever makes sense. there were plenty of pigeons to draw and i should have drawn the trees and other things around me but i think the bigger sketchbook would have been better for that so next time i will be taking it with me. i am gearing myself to have a go at drawing actual people as i know the lions, minus there features, pretty much look like people now anyway and it is time to move on with my drawing.

14 September 2009

white rabbits...

...no it is not the first of the month but there is a trend in Manchester it seems, to carry a white rabbit with you or have one on a lead. so as we can see, here is a page from the sketchbook. the printing plans of last week did not come to bare fruit as the wedding plans got in the way. lets see what happens this week now that most of them have been dealt with. the drawing room is all tidy and i have some website work to be getting on with this evening. it is a day off tomorrow so hopefully the weather will be nice for me to go and draw outside. i am itching to draw some buildings and shop fronts.

12 September 2009

spiders...

...are everywhere! in the bathroom, in the living room and sneaking up on you when you are least expecting them. according to the sketchbook and i have been to the mister's work, watching films, re-potting cacti, spider hunting, making coffees and the like. pretty much what you see is what i have been doing. i ain't played no footie though. i used to. i used to play five-a-side and i was often the goalkeeper.

11 September 2009

football...

...i love the newspapers for footy pull out sections. i have been collecting a right pile of them these past weeks or so. i may even have to start supporting a team! there is nowt much on this page as i once i started filling in after the footballers it didn't look right so there are some blank areas.

08 September 2009

two fifths...

...of my way through the sketchbook, which can not be bad. the sketching and ideas seem to be picking up. it always to seems to be that i have moan when i shouldn't really be moaning (see previous entry). things are not that bad. i am on track to creating at least one new print this week and five robber bird purses. a drawing of a story is what i would love to do most of all and so i will keep working at it. thanks must go to those who keep buying my work. the print studio fund is growing. so i am popping in tomorrow to make a new screen.

07 September 2009

brain freeze...

...i can not seem to think straight. i keep drawing and sewing. slowly i am getting somewhere but frustrated with a load of things. i don't think i am cut out for story writing. it is hard work so i keep leaving the book and story ideas to go back to playing with the sewing machine and lions. the website now needs my attention and so does etsy and plans for christmas drawings and things.

05 September 2009

new season...

...a lot of new things have started this September. we are in the early stages of the football season and as i continue to draw, a few more lions doing actual things (drawn from reference) may now start to appear more frequently. i am a whirlwind at making purses now and am still deciding what to print next onto calico. i only have one screen until i pick my other one up from Preston so am phaffing with the designs. i hope to go to the print studio Monday to make a new screen. fingers crossed for the phaffing.

01 September 2009

actual work...

...here are the purses that i have been making for the past couple of weeks or so. i am using the old octopus screen prints that i did on calico in 2008. i have also used a friend's old pyjama bottoms to line the purses - recycling in action! i have made about sixteen of these so far and some are in PAD right now as for etsy - they will be online in the shop as soon as i take some decent photos.

back to oliver jeffers...
...as asked by Jen, here is the owl that Oliver drew and the other picture that I was given by the lady who was handing out his drawings from the 'read and draw' session that he did. it is a tad crumpled as the wind got it that day but as soon as i can - it is going in a frame! i am not very good at taking photos and so my etsy shop listings have come to a standstill for the moment.
new friend...

...here we have another cacti in the drawing room. one that likes to wear pins. i found him at the Craft Shop in the Royal Exchange Theatre and he was made by Andrea Lord. I am unable to find any internet links for her. he will be my new little helper while i am phaffing around with fabrics and the sewing machine.

30 August 2009

back...

...to the same game. here we have a page from aye you guessed it - the sketchbook. from when i went to Stoke at the end of July. one evening we went to gala bingo. we had fun. we didn't win but i got to draw many bingo lions. the second job i ever had was working in a bingo hall. i used to call the table top bingo out but sometimes would laugh and get the giggles. i have been working on a new batch of purses and the screen pattern designs but all is going tad slow at the moment. i have just finished a batch of five days straight at the cafe.

27 August 2009

where am i...

...i have been busy busy busy is all i can say. doing various different things, most are not illustration related. there is some new stock of mine at PAD in Preston. the cafe keeps getting in the way at the moment as i do need the pennies to pay for print studio hours etc. i will return as i can. thank you for staying along with me.

21 August 2009

oliver jeffers...

...yesterday i went to a special event that was at the Waterstone's in Manchester Arndale Centre. Mister Oliver Jeffers was there, drawing pictures while a lady read from two of his books! he showed us all how to make a paper plane and then held a paper plane flying competition. he did a bit of book signing and so i took along my copy of The Great Paper Caper for him to sign and he drew me an owl. in return I gave him a pirate lion postcard and a bird and button print. i also got one of the pictures that he drew whilst the lady was reading! the afternoon was super cool and it was amazing to meet and speak with Mr Jeffers as is one of my all time top illustrators! what a great day. i was tempted to draw a lion on the board before he arrived as he was a tad late but i didn't dare. maybe next time.

20 August 2009

another page...

...while i try and do twenty million things at once, i am still finding the time to sit down and draw. most of this was drawn at the mister's place of work. i also took some photos of his work area and the lab so that i have some reference later for proper background work. the sewing machine is calling me and so is mike the pencil. i need to work on some screen print designs.

17 August 2009

lion hunting...
...here is one that is in my hometown of Huddersfield. he lives above the Lion Chambers building/office which is opposite the main entrance of the train station. i took a few photos of him when i last visited.
page two and six...

...drawing all the time is making my brain think more about what to draw next. i often do draw the same thing but it helps me relax after a long day at the cafe plus it helps my brain when it goes on then to draw the 'new' things. at the moment i am drawing horse riding lions, cycle lions and footballers. i tried to take photos of the purses for here and for etsy but nope, they looked horrible and same goes for the ones i tried to take of the AOI book. might try again later with the camera. the purses are off to PAD as soon as i can get them there. i would like to thank all those who went to The Turnpike Gallery at Leigh to see my work and to those who bought some of it!

12 August 2009

new and old...

...a page i started while in Blackpool (end of June) and filled in as and when i wanted to. i am working hard at the moment and feel like i have three separate lives. one is illustration/print/craft, the other one is the cafe and the other one is just everything else. i am starting to lose sleep and constantly feel tired with a big fat headache. in a way it is good as i am forced to think quick and fast but some decisions take a bit longer. i am chuffed to bits that i have taught myself with guidance from friends, how to make purses. i have rediscovered some fabric that may be suitable to print on - bit better than calico. i am in the process of designing a pattern of which to print on it to then make purses. must dash as the sewing machine beckons.

10 August 2009

drinking...

...during my week away, we often went to the local pub or out and about. being the drawing geek that i am, took my sketchbook with me a couple of times and drew. we did visit a pub called 'The Famous Lion' !!! how super cool is that? today i was back in the print room to finish off the wedding invites and this second batch printed a lot better. thank you to everyone who left comments about them. it must have been one of my quicker designs! i am off for a mini wander into the city centre of Manchester and may do something creative later but the wedding to-do list now beckons some of my attention.

07 August 2009

on the motorway...

...in Betsy the little red mini. last week, the other Debbie and i went on a little trip to Tamworth. on the way back, i decided it was time to do some travelling drawing and drew this page. i think it is amazing as i do not draw these types of things at all plus trying to draw whilst sat in a little red mini that is doing 50mph down a motorway is quite difficult! i used to draw while i travelled on a bus and the pages would always be full of houses. can you spot the camper van, car and caravan or the motor home? i think there are a few Eddie Stobbart lorries in there.

06 August 2009

computer...

...to drawing, to computer then to the print room. here we have a lion card design, for me and the mister. we are getting married in a couple of months. i went to a new but familiar print room today and since my last visit things have changed. i was a bit unprepared and so not everything went according to plan. some cards came out ok, some did not, some may be rescued and some were left blank until next time. there is some relearning to do with this new place of printing but i foresee an increase in print output as it is closer to home and that makes me smile inside. i have the purses to tidy up and finish plus a spot of Mad Monica cleaning, so off i go.
early bird...

...with an early worm. i am up early today putting some finishing touches to a screen print design. i am off to play in a new print room later on today. here is a page that i drew in Stoke. i do have a new cactus and we saw a lot of rain. the other Debbie found a 20p piece without a date on and well, everything that i have drawn on this page happened except for the sunglasses!

04 August 2009

made with a zip...

...while i was at Lo-Fi DIY's first birthday party this evening. We meet up every first Tuesday of the month and craft and create together, though nothing much gets done amongst all the talking! This was the second time that I managed to complete something within an evening as I usually take robotingtons along with me to sew or finish off. it is nice to take a break off these projects to do something new. the new zip brooch will be going on my coat and i hope to make more in the future. maybe a purple one. the purses look good. it took me three different ways but the third way looks the best. more about these later in the week.
houses...

...i quite like drawing houses, what with the 'drawing things in context' project. it has just come to me but i should try drawing a lion in my office, drawing at the desk and using the sewing machine. mmm...well i have purses to sort out today and then this evening it is Lo-Fi DIY's first birthday so i am off to go and craft at that. i also have a very special card design to draw out properly. we shall see if today has enough TIME for me!

02 August 2009

where is the time...

...the time to do everything you ever need to do, get done and wish to do in a day? here is a page from the on-going sketchbook project. i know that i should be and want to be drawing 'things in context' and that is what i shall do in time. today i photographed some of the skyride cyclists that were riding through Manchester city centre. i shall use some of these photos for reference for drawing the bike lions. i am back from a lovely busy week visiting the other Debbie who lives in Stoke. photos of Betsy, monkeys, a fancy park, rain and the AOI Images 33 book to follow as and when there is TIME!

28 July 2009

upload picture...

...i am in Stoke at the moment visiting a very good friend of mine for a few days. i am unable to scan any sketches and upload them as there is no scanner. i may get to upload a photo tomorrow once the camera batteries have been recharged. i am drawing quite abit but finding time to rest and to go out in mini adventures in Betsy the little red mini.

23 July 2009

lots to do...

...this page is from when the mister and i went to London at the beginning of July. we went to the natural history museum and to see where the Queen lives. i have just about managed to put all the photos on the computer now and may get round to posting a couple up but i am one very busy person at the moment. i have some purses and birds to make as well as designing some new cards. the list of 'doing things' lions keeps getting getting added to which is good so i am hoping some story may come out of the randomness that is the big scruffy sketchbook.

19 July 2009

let me ride my bicycle...
...i haven't been posting on a regular basis as i have been drawing away in my rough sketchbook book. i have been drawing characters doing things like riding bikes, surfing, sat together eating, driving cars, swimming with fish. it is going quite well but the surfing lions look bit non-debbie like so i am going to have another go at drawing them now that i have drawn down how their body should look while surfing. i have also been sewing birds like what i used to make and am hoping to make some 'new' birds soon.

14 July 2009

stamp collection...

...of first class stamps. its not an exciting collection like ones of birds or fishes. even though they are all the same, there are some that i like more than others. drawing something like this makes you realise how such a small thing like a nose or smile line, can make such a difference to a character. i am looking for inspiration at the moment and feel like i am looking in all the wrong places. how do you know which media/method is right for you to colour in/work with?

With the image above, i would recommend clicking on it to see it in more detail.

13 July 2009

zombie walk...

...just over one thousand zombies walked through the city centre streets of Manchester yesterday in the hope of breaking the Guinness World Record but they were about 160 zombies short. they did however raise about £2000 for various charities and another Zombie Aid walk is planned for October 2009. the mister and some friends took part, i was playing photographer for the day as i was too tired to play dress-up plus we only heard about the event the night before.

10 July 2009

insert title here...

...here is another page from the 'new' sketchbook. i don't think i like drawing on rectangle pages. i am starting to think more about characters in context and i am slowly getting there. i keep drawing and drawing. there are new ideas but also some old ones. the etsy shop is slowly being stocked up with print work. there are some limited edition prints for sale. and there will also be some artist proofs at a lower price. i am also gearing up for a ladysnail give-away. as you will have guessed - it is on the to-do list! the photographs are still on the camera as last night me and the knitting machine had a party. i had a go at designing a pattern and knitting said pattern. it is a very exciting work in progress.

08 July 2009

travelling doodles...

...last week i went to artlab in Preston. i drew this page while on the train and while sat in the artlab meeting. i haven't been drawing much lions lately as i have quite a few things to finish and to sort out. i made a small lino cut at artlab but have yet to print it. its on the to-do list which i am tackling for the rest of the day. please keep an eye on the etsy shop for new items which will be listed today in due course, though that depends on the camera/scanner.

06 July 2009

it's always either one thing...

...or another, the cafe, phaffing about on errands or on days out and about. i went to London at the weekend with the mister as we took The Robber Bird to the AOI ready for the Images 33 Exhibition. while in London, we visited the Natural History Museum where i did a spot of drawing and Buckingham Palace. once again, i will post a couple of photos of London and a couple of Blackpool when i have moved all 400+ photos off the camera onto Eric External. too many things to do and too little time. i long to be a office hermit. i long for the days when i can draw all day. up above is a page from Blackpool. at the moment i have many half-full pages, i keep trying to finish them but i keep starting new ones. i think some pages just don't want to be finished.

30 June 2009

games and prizes...

...new things to draw appeared on this page as a result of the things i saw in Blackpool. I didn't draw enough or as much as i planned to as it was too damn hot. i unintentionally caught the sun on my shoulder and now it is very sore. ouch. i have added plenty of ideas to the ideas list though which is good, just need the time to be able to expand on some of these ideas and play around with them.

28 June 2009

stamps...

...i seem to be buying a lot of stamps at the moment. i am tempted to draw a whole page of them. i think i may use the soft-cut to make a print of a stamp? i still ain't used the soft cut yet - thank you for all the suggestions. i will get round to doing something with it. there is an impending feeling of doing some serious colour work which i know i need to do. today there are plans to draw, sew, clean and this evening i am going to see Lenny Kravitz!
